Drawing on 73 interviews with Houston-area Asian American residents, this brief examines how community infrastructure — such as businesses, congregations, civic organizations, cultural events and personal networks — is used and valued. It is part of the Kinder Institute for Urban Research’s Asian American Community Study, a multiyear, multilingual initiative exploring the diverse experiences of Asian residents across the Houston region.
Key findings
- Community infrastructure helps residents find support from people who share their language and ethnicity.
- Visible community infrastructure signals to residents that their communities have a place in Houston.
- Community infrastructure can connect residents across the wider Houston area.
- Residents differ in how much they use community infrastructure and how easily they can access it.
The findings speak to the importance of understanding why residents value existing networks and places, as well as addressing gaps where options are lacking.
