A landmark project
The Kinder Institute for Urban Research at Rice University is embarking on a multiyear, multilingual study focusing on Asian American communities, among the Houston region’s fastest-growing ethnic groups. With your support, this effort will build upon Dr. Stephen L. Klineberg’s earlier work and will provide even more important insights.
Single-race non-Hispanic Asians are projected to become the largest immigrant group in the country by the middle of the century, surpassing Hispanics. By 2055, Asians are expected to make up 36% of all U.S. immigrants, while Hispanics will make up 34%, according to projections by the Pew Research Center.
Closer to home, the Asian population grew 53% in the Houston metro area between 2010 and 2020, nearly three times the growth rate of the region overall.
A portrait of Asian American experiences and attitudes
To capture a representative sample, this research study will require extensive outreach to Asian American households in Harris, Fort Bend, and Montgomery counties in multiple languages, including Simplified Chinese and Vietnamese. Participants will be recruited through the Greater Houston Community Panel.
Once these findings are analyzed, the Kinder Institute will publish a Special Report that highlights the participants’ perceptions, experiences, and attitudes over time.
