The Kinder Institute Luncheon returns May 20, 2024! Dr. Marc. L. Boom, president and CEO of Houston Methodist, will be honored with the 2024 Stephen L. Klineberg Award for outstanding leadership in health care. Kinder Institute Director Dr. Ruth N. López Turley will present findings from the 43rd Kinder Houston Area Survey and discuss ongoing research initiatives.

About the honoree
Dr. Marc L. Boom, the recipient of the 2024 Stephen L. Klineberg Award, is the president and CEO of Houston Methodist.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Boom helped lead the rollout of vaccinations in the Houston area with an emphasis on equity, prioritizing high-need areas and populations most vulnerable to infection. In addition, he was the first hospital system CEO in the nation to implement a workforce vaccine mandate. Houston Methodist was also the first hospital in the U.S. to treat COVID-19 patients with convalescent plasma therapy, and it was one of the first to conduct clinical trials of the antiviral drug remdesivir.
Boom received a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Texas at Austin, an M.D. from Baylor College of Medicine and an M.B.A. from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He completed a residency in internal medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, and fellowships in geriatric and general medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
In addition to his part-time medical practice and role in hospital leadership, Boom is an assistant professor of medicine at Weill Medical College of Cornell University and an adjunct professor of management, policy and community health at the University of Texas School of Public Health, and he previously served as an adjunct professor of management at Rice University.
Boom and his wife of more than 25 years, Julie, have three children: Kathryn, John and Janie.
About the Stephen L. Klineberg Award
Named for Dr. Stephen L. Klineberg, founding director of Rice University's Kinder Institute for Urban Research, the Stephen L. Klineberg Award recognizes individuals who have made a lasting impact on Greater Houston. The Klineberg Award has been presented to Mayor Sylvester Turner (2023), Dr. Anne Chao (2022), Robert Eury (2021), Rev. William Lawson (2020), Jeff Hines (2019), Angela Blanchard (2018) and Tom Bacon (2017).
