Houston Skyline

With immigration and economic transformation guiding shifts in the Houston area and across the country, this report draws on several years worth of survey data to capture the way these new realities are being experienced by members of Houston's ethnic populations.

Houston is in rapid transformation. A variety of new developments have converged to challenge traditional assumptions and force a rethinking about the city and its future. Among such changes, two are particularly important. Major immigration flows are accelerating Houston's evolution into a new kind of community a multiethnic metropolis to be forged out of an unprecedented variety of colors, languages, cultural values, and ethnic traditions. At the same time, the booming "resource economy" that characterized this region for most of the twentieth century has ended. Along with the rest of the nation, Houston is now having to compete in the much more complex and problematic environment of a worldwide, knowledge-based, high technology economy.

This report draws on several years worth of survey data to capture the way these new realities are being experienced by members of Houston's ethnic populations.
