The Houston Area L.O.V.E. Survey is a first-of-its-kind study mapping local LGBTQ+ experiences across health, housing, economics and community life. The study, which was co-designed with the Greater Houston LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce and the Montrose Center, provides critical local data on one of the largest LGBTQ+ populations in the country. More than 1,000 people who are a part of the LGBTQ+ community completed the pilot study.
Key findings
- Survey respondents reflected Greater Houston's demographic and geographic diversity, representing eight sexual identities alongside various gender expressions, age groups, and racial and ethnic backgrounds.
- While many respondents were economically well-off (about 50% lived in households earning over $100,000 annually), there were demographic income disparities, particularly among transgender respondents.
- More than 60% of respondents felt like they belonged in their neighborhood. However, this ranged from 71% of gay respondents to 40% of transgender respondents.
- Respondents reported relatively high levels of access to primary, specialty and mental healthcare providers. However, access to gender-affirming care was lower, with less than half of respondents seeking such care reporting consistent access.
Local leaders, organizations and residents can use this data to shape strategies, programs and policies that build a better Houston for everyone.
