HERC Student Mobility

This program will highlight historic patterns of significant student mobility, what it means for student outcomes and strategies for supporting students.

Join the Kinder Institute's Houston Education Research Consortium (HERC) for a conversation on student mobility within and between school districts in the Houston region. Student mobility occurs when students change schools either during the school year or between years. HERC will highlight patterns of significant mobility, what the patterns mean for student outcomes and strategies for supporting students experiencing these moves. There will also be discussion of the role housing support can play in stabilizing residential mobility, and in turn student mobility, for families.

This event is geared toward school district leaders, state legislators, housing organizations, community organizations and individuals in the Houston area who want to understand more about the challenges facing students and schools. It will allow participants to discuss opportunities and potential partnerships to address challenges around student mobility.

PNC is the presenting sponsor of the Kinder Institute's Education Research Engagement Series.

When students change schools, how often is the cost of housing to blame?
RECAP :  Nov. 6, 2023

Tens of thousands of students in the Houston area change schools during the school year or over the summer, which poses a variety of problems for academic achievement, according to the Kinder Institute’s Houston Education Research Consortium. In some cases, students are not moving schools for academic reasons, but because of housing needs — their families are facing eviction or in search of more affordable rent.
