The Significance of Teachers’ Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching and Their Math Background on Students’ Math Achievement

Students in math class

This report looks at the effect of specialized teacher training in math for students' academic performance.

Research suggests that teachers’ content and pedagogical knowledge as well as educational beliefs about teaching and learning are among the key factors for effective teaching. This study follows several K-12 teachers who participated in the Rice University School Mathematics Project's summer campus program to help math teachers develop. By looking at the academic performance of students in math classes, the study is able to determine a relationship between specialized training, a teacher's educational background and other important factors.
