Evaluating High School Dropout Indicators and Assessing Their Strength

Discussion

This brief evaluates indicators for students at risk of dropping out of school.

Finding accurate predictors of high school non-completion continues to rank as a major concern among policymakers and social science scholars whose research focuses on inequality in educational attainment. Few studies report measures of accuracy, of which the main components consist of a predictor’s ability to identify actual dropouts rather than graduates. This report breaks down the usefulness of measures used to predict which students are at risk for dropping out.
