Alief Independent School District serves a highly diverse community, with 68% of households speaking languages other than English and nearly 100 dialects represented. Many of its approximately 39,000 students come from families facing economic challenges. Immigration status or limited English proficiency often hinder access to essential services like employment, education and community resources and limit opportunities for economic growth.
Alief ISD launched the All Families Engaged project to provide support to students’ adult family members and help improve their access to economic opportunity. The program provides English as a second language (ESL) classes, citizenship preparatory classes and legal services at campus-based family centers through partnerships with community partners.
Program evaluation
As a research partner, the Kinder Institute is evaluating the All Families Engaged project’s strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities to ensure long-term success. In addition to data from Alief ISD, feedback is being collected through:
- Interviews with program administrators, staff and participants regarding their perceptions and experiences
- Surveys to track program activities and participant satisfaction
