AVANCE's Parent-Child Education Program (PCEP) is a national model for early childhood intervention. Through workshops, toy-making sessions, home visitations and a variety of resources, parents learn how to better support their children ages 0-3 excel during these critical years of their development. At the same time, children learn basic concepts such as letters, shapes and numbers that help prepare them for elementary school.
Program evaluation
This mixed-methods study by the Kinder Institute builds on a previous randomized controlled trial (RCT) to understand the long-term impacts of the PCEP program. In addition to analyzing data from AVANCE, the institute will administer:
- Surveys to both treatment program participants (those who attended PCEP) and control participants (those who did not attend PCEP)
- The surveys will assess self-efficacy, psychological well-being, perceived social status, social belonging, family support and strain, material hardship and financial resilience
- Survey data will be linked to prior RCT waves to examine longitudinal patterns in economic mobility
- Interviews with stakeholders, including participating PCEP-assigned families, AVANCE leadership and PCEP instructors, to explore how the program may have shaped family decision-making, access to community resources, social networks, understanding of school readiness and participants’ sense of empowerment
