Smiley is an environmental and urban sociologist. He and Michael Oluf Emerson are the co-authors of Market Cities, People Cities: The Shape of Our Urban Future, which focuses on diverging urban trends by analyzing the cases of Copenhagen and Houston. His research also analyzes disparities across metropolitan areas in industrial air pollution, politics and inequalities of urban development, social responses to disaster and public opinion of climate change and immigration. New research, supported by the Gulf Research Program of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, examines urbanization in the Houston area, and how it may connect to risk from flooding during disasters.
